9th Jan to 13th Jan: Thriller introduction.

16th Jan to 20th Jan: Analysis of real and student examples/ Production logos.

23rd Jan to 27th Jan: Planning and delivery of pitches.

30th Jan to 3rd Feb: Storyboarding, shot lists and other planning.

Cameras are available from Friday 4th Feb at 4.10pm until shooting deadline of 9am Monday 7th March. Students can have 2 overnights or one weekend to film.

6th Feb to 10th Feb: Filming.

13th Feb to 17th Feb: Half Term.

20th Feb to 24th Feb: Filming and editing.

27th Feb to 2nd March: Filming and editing.

5th March to 9th March: 9th March Shooting deadline. 2nd lesson of this week is Rough Cut Deadline. Third lesson of week, rough cut feedback.

12th March to 16th March: End of second lesson of the week is Final Cut Deadline. Last lesson of the week, feedback on final cuts and re-introduction to Evaluation questions.

19th March to 23rd March: 9am 19th March is Interim writing deadline. Lessons this week are for feedback on interim drafts and revisions/writing.

9am 26th March: Final writing deadline.

The questions in Italics are to help you think about how you might answer the evaluation questions:

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Does your project look like a film opening? Why? What conventions have you used? Does it break conventions or use conventions from any other form (TV/advertising/internet)? Does your opening clearly fit into the thriller genre or sub genre? Is it more of a hybrid? Is it unclear what genre it is? How have you used characters, narrative? How have you used camera, editing, sound and mise en scene? How have you used titles and graphics?

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Does you film introduce particular characters? Who are they? What do the audience find out about them – what are they wearing? Can you tell anything about them from the setting they are in? What do they do or say?

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

What sort of budget do you think your film might command (this will dictate who will distribute your film and how much gets spent on the marketing campaign)? Do you think the film will show in multiplex cinemas or independent cinemas or will it go straight to TV or DVD? What channel might show the film and at what time of day?

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

Age can determine the target audience for films but it is not the only or the most important factor? Language, nationality and regionality can be important? Peoples interests and tastes will make a difference about what they watch

5. How did you attract/address your audience?

Does your film use themes from other successful films that might help attract an audience? Or is your film’s selling point its originality? Did you choose settings, locations, props, costumes or characters and costumes in order to communicate particular things to your audience? Did you choose to explore particular themes to address or target the film at a particular audience?

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product?

How have you found filming on HD or DV video? What have you learnt about recording and editing sound, images and video? What equipment and programs have you used (photoshop, garageband, final cut express) ? What is the process you went through to create your product? What files have you had to use to transfer media? Have you used any digital effects on your sounds and images? How have you published your work on the internet?

7. Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Have you stuck to continuity editing? (Match on action, 180 degree rule, shot reverse shot?) Have you used a variety of shots? How have the locations, props and costumes improved? Did you shoot any dialogue? What have you improved in terms of planning, storyboarding and organization? What have others said about your project?

Thriller conventions

Obviously, many thrillers these days are hybrids ie. they draw from more than 1 set of conventions. However, it is still possible to create a list of thriller conventions. Consider the list below in your analysis and technical construction of a thriller:

Thriller Generic Characteristics

The narrative centres around a crime eg. a theft or a murder.

The protagonist is fallible and has an 'Achilles heel' that is exploited by the antagonist. The title of the thriller may relate to this weakness eg Vertigo and Insomnia.

The protagonist will be seen 'in peril' in one or more scenes before the resolution.

The antagonist ensnares the protagonist in an increasingly complex web, until the protagonist feels isolated and helpless.

The narrative presents ordinary situations in which extraordinary things happen.

Micro elements combine in a build up of suspense.

Themes of identity are common: mistaken identity, doubling/doppelgangers, amnesia.

Themes of seeing, reflection and mirroring. Manipulation of perspectives, visual McGuffins, and optical illusions are common.

The audience of a thriller is placed in the ambiguous position of voyeur. Voyeurism can also be a theme and the objectification of female characters is common especially in earlier thrillers.

A series of/ one important enigma(s) are/is set up in the opening sequence of the film, is further complicated during the first part of the film and only resolved at the very end.

Thriller Conventions

The following is a list of thriller conventions. Use it to both to create your own sequence and analyse existing ones, remembering that different films will use different conventions in different ways............:

Thriller Conventions.

A crime at the core of the narrative (often murder, but not necessarily).
A complex narrative structure, with false paths, clues and resolutions.
A narrative pattern of establishing enigmas which the viewer expects to be resolved.
A protagonist who is systematically dis-empowered and drawn into a complex web of intrigue by the antagonist.
Extraordinary events happening in ordinary situations.
Themes of identity.
Themes of mirroring.
Themes of voyeurism.
Protagonist with a ‘flaw’ which is exploited by the antagonist.
Titles often reflect an aspect of the pro/antagonist’s psychological state.
There is often a scene near the end of the film in which the protagonist is in peril.
Mise en scene which echoes/ mirrors the protagonist’s plight.

Important Health and Safety information for when you are out filming:

Remember that although you might be concentrating on your filming, you still need to be aware of traffic.
Always be polite and respectful when interacting with the public.
Do not attempt to film anything which could be construed by a passer by as illegal.
If you are going to try and film in a public place, you should approach the people who are in charge of that place for permission.
Do not film in dangerous places.
If you encounter problems, ring the college on 01223 507400 and ask reception to be put through to Media Studies.

What should I be doing outside lesson times ?

This project will not be a success for you, unless you do some work outside of class time. Here are some suggestions:

1. Watch all the material here and note down points of interest, uploading your points as posts to your group blog
2. search the web for material about thrillers and other examples, e.g. on youtube; again create links or paste videos/pics/film posters etc into your blog
3. have a look on the web for visual ideas in any kinds of text- photos of props, costumes, facial expressions, locations,fonts, anything that you might use- paste these into your blog as a kind of planning/ideas scrapbook/sketchbook
4. Use a digital camera or your phone to take some recce shots of locations and upload these to your blog. if you are doing it via the college computers, make sure you have the right connector with you (for G8 eMacs), though bluetooth will work in G5 and G7!

ALL THE ABOVE WILL CONTRIBUTE TO PLANNING MARKS- so well worth doing!

5. start writing your essay- instructions are on moodle and will also appear below. It is very straightforward and follows the same formula as the Kids Tv project. Meeting the deadlines and improving your drafts contributes to your marks, so its worth doing!

6. Watch some thrillers to get ideas of what works and what doesn't- particularly lots of opening sequences for what is used in titles and for conventions of film openings. Listen to soundtracks and consider how to set up mood through sound.
7. Sketch storyboard frames ready for the animatics and so you have the maximum amount of planning of your shots ready for when you go out with the camera.

8. Work out when you can do the shoot as you will need to be well organised and ready
9. You will be shooting the sequence outside college in the group's own time anyway

10. Ask other people to look at your ideas, your blog and your writing- parents have often seen a surprising number of useful films! they might even be prepared to be in your film...
